Rank Math is currently one of the most popular SEO plugins for WordPress, and for good reason. It offers features that used to exist only in paid premium tools, and now they are free. Even so, many new users are unsure how to set it up properly. This guide walks you through everything from installation to advanced configuration, step by step.

Why Rank Math rather than another SEO plugin?

Knowing how to set up Rank Math is useful for every online business owner in Indonesia. Compared with Yoast SEO, its main competitor, Rank Math comes out ahead in several key areas: more features in the free version, more detailed SEO analysis, richer schema markup support and a more modern interface. Its free version already covers what Yoast only offers in its paid premium version.

Step 1: Install Rank Math

  • Go to WordPress Admin > Plugins > Add New
  • Search for “Rank Math SEO”
  • Click Install, then Activate
  • Create a free account at rankmath.com (for the full feature set)
  • Follow the setup wizard that opens automatically

Step 2: Configure the general settings

Setup wizard

Rank Math has a setup wizard that guides you through the initial configuration. Choose your type of website (business, blog, online store and so on), enter your website's basic information, and connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics. This matters because your GSC data will then appear directly in your WordPress dashboard.

Titles & Meta

Under Rank Math > Titles & Meta, set the default format for:

  • Homepage title: Website Name | Tagline (for example: Webzoo | Jasa Website Profesional Indonesia)
  • Post title format: %title% | %sitename% (article title | website name)
  • Meta description: leave it empty so you can write one by hand for each page
  • Separator: choose a pipe (|) or a dash (–), whichever you prefer

Step 3: Settings for each post and page

This is the most important part of setting up Rank Math. Every time you create a new post or page, scroll down in the WordPress editor to find the Rank Math panel. The panel has several tabs, and the two most important are covered below:

General tab (the most important)

  • Focus Keyword: enter the main keyword you want to target (for example: “how to set up Rank Math”)
  • Meta Title: the title that appears on Google, ideally 50-60 characters and containing the focus keyword
  • Meta Description: the description that appears on Google, 150-160 characters, persuasive and containing the keyword

Rank Math gives each page an SEO score (0-100) based on how well the content is optimised, and once you have finished setting up Rank Math you will check this score constantly. Aim for a score of 80 or above for every important article.

Schema tab

Schema markup helps Google understand what kind of content you publish and can produce rich snippets in search results, such as star ratings for products or recipe details. Since 2023, FAQ rich results have only been shown for authoritative government and health websites. This step is often skipped when people are setting up Rank Math, even though it is easy. For blog posts, choose the “Article” schema. For service pages, choose “Local Business” or “Service”.

Step 4: XML sitemap

Rank Math automatically creates an XML sitemap that helps Google find and index every page on your website. As part of setting up Rank Math, enable it under Rank Math > Sitemap Settings and make sure every content type (posts, pages, categories) is included. Once it is active, submit the sitemap to Google Search Console.

Step 5: Analyse content with Content AI

Rank Math's Content AI feature (available in the free version with limited credits) analyses your article and gives specific suggestions: headings to add, related keywords to include, the ideal content length, and a recommended structure based on the top-ranking pages on Google.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Duplicate focus keywords: each page should target a different keyword
  • Meta descriptions that are too long: anything over 160 characters gets cut off on Google
  • Ignoring the SEO score: a low score is a guide to what needs improving, not a punishment
  • Not submitting the sitemap to GSC: without submitting it, you cannot monitor the sitemap's status and indexing errors in GSC

Conclusion

Rank Math is one of the most useful plugins for your WordPress website, and the basic version is free. Once Rank Math is set up correctly, the plugin gives every piece of content you create a strong SEO foundation. The habit that matters most: fill in the focus keyword, meta title and meta description for every article you publish.
