How to increase Domain Authority (DA) turns out to involve much more than earning backlinks. Moz calculates the DA score itself from link data, so backlinks remain the deciding factor. But 6 other factors help indirectly, because they make your website more worth linking to and stronger in Google: content depth, brand signals, technical SEO, user engagement, domain age and internal link structure. This article focuses on the non-backlink factors that are often overlooked, even though Indonesian businesses can control them more easily.
It is important to understand that Domain Authority is a metric created by Moz, and Google does not use it as a ranking factor. The 1-100 score predicts how likely your domain is to appear in the SERPs. We have covered effective link building in a separate article. Here we look at how to read DA correctly, then at 6 other factors that help your DA rise.
Key points in this article
- DA is a Moz metric, not a direct Google ranking factor
- The DA score is calculated from link data; other factors help indirectly
- Content depth (2000+ words, comprehensive) helps attract backlinks
- Brand mentions open up new backlink opportunities
- Healthy technical SEO: HTTPS, mobile-first design, schema markup
- Domain age: older domains have usually collected more backlinks
- A bounce rate under 50% and long dwell time point to content worth sharing
- Tidy internal linking strengthens topical authority
1. First, understand that DA is not a Google ranking factor
Before you optimise anything, get this straight: Domain Authority is a predictive score created by Moz, and Google does not use it for rankings. John Mueller (Google Search Advocate) has said many times that Google does not use Domain Authority.
DA is still useful, though, because:
- It reflects your overall SEO strength (when DA rises, organic rankings usually rise too)
- Many agencies and clients use it as a benchmark
- It is useful for competitor analysis
Comparable to DA, there is also Domain Rating (DR) from Ahrefs, Authority Score from Semrush and Topical Trust Flow from Majestic. The concepts are similar but the formulas differ. For a thorough audit, read our guide to auditing your own website's SEO.
2. Content depth: coverage matters more than length
Comprehensive content of 2000+ words is more likely to earn backlinks than 10 articles of 500 words, and those backlinks are what raise DA. Google also values topical coverage, meaning how thoroughly you cover a topic.
Content depth signals that make content worth linking to:
- Articles of 1500-3000+ words on your main topics (pillar content)
- Coverage of related subtopics (semantic relationships)
- Visuals: original images, infographics, tables, charts
- A scannable format: clear H2/H3 headings, bullet lists, blockquotes
- Regular updates (refresh every 6-12 months)
The strategy: for each main topic in your business, create 1 pillar piece (3000+ words) plus 5-10 cluster pieces (1500-2000 words) that link to each other. Learn the on-page SEO techniques that give content a search-friendly structure.
3. Brand signals: mentions that open the door to links
Brand mentions without a link do not count towards the DA score, because Moz only reads link data. Mentions are still useful: your brand becomes better known, and many mentions can be turned into links by asking the site owner to add one.
How to earn brand mentions actively:
- HARO (Help A Reporter Out): answer journalists' questions and your brand gets mentioned in the publication
- Guest podcasts and webinars: the host mentions your brand name
- Review platforms: Google Reviews, Trustpilot, marketplace seller reviews
- Active forums: Kaskus, Reddit, Quora (do not spam; add value)
- Press releases: distribute through Antara, Detik or Indonesian PR platforms
- Local citations: list your business in local directories (with consistent NAP)
Target: earn 3-5 organic brand mentions a month from authoritative sources (DA above 40).
4. Healthy technical SEO: HTTPS, mobile-first, schema
Technical health is not part of the Moz DA formula, but it decides whether Google can crawl and show your pages properly. A website that is slow, full of broken links or still without HTTPS is also less convincing to other sites that might link to it.
Basic technical checklist:
- HTTPS: essential, and free through Let’s Encrypt
- Mobile-first responsive design: Google indexes with its mobile crawler
- Passing Core Web Vitals: LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1 (see Core Web Vitals 2026)
- Schema markup: at least Organization, Article and BreadcrumbList
- XML sitemap: submitted to Google Search Console
- Robots.txt: not blocking important resources
- Broken links under 5%: audit with the free version of Screaming Frog
These technical fixes do not change your DA directly, but you can track their effect in Google Search Console.
5. User engagement: bounce rate and dwell time
Moz does not use behavioural signals or visitor behaviour data to calculate DA. Engagement still matters, because content that people actually read is more likely to be shared and linked to, and readers who stay are more likely to contact your business.
Signs of healthy engagement:
- Bounce rate under 50% (ideally 30-40%)
- Average session duration over 2 minutes
- More than 2 pages per session (people read more than one article)
- SERP CTR above 5% for positions 1-3
How to improve engagement: articles that answer the user's intent quickly in the first paragraph, relevant internal links to other articles, formatting that is easy to scan, and a clear CTA. Also read our SEO basics for beginners to build a strong foundation for engagement.
6. Domain age and history
Domains that are 5+ years old with a clean history tend to have a higher DA than new domains. Age alone does not make a domain good; older domains have usually built up more backlinks, brand mentions and trust signals over time.
What helps domain age work for your DA:
- Keep your domain (do not change the TLD or the name)
- Renew your domain well before it runs out so it never lapses
- Avoid a history of hacking or penalties (check with the Wayback Machine and GSC)
- Publish content consistently (rather than leaving the blog untouched for 2 years)
If you have just bought an expired domain, audit its backlink profile first with an Ahrefs or Semrush trial. Domains with a spammy history usually keep a poor DA even after they are cleaned up.
7. Tidy internal linking (topical authority)
Many people forget that internal link structure does not count towards DA, because DA only reads links from other domains. A tidy internal link structure does pass the strength of your backlinks on to other pages of your website and helps Google understand your topical authority.
Internal linking best practice:
- Each article links to 3-7 related articles (in context, not at random)
- Descriptive anchor text (not “click here”)
- Pillar content receives plenty of internal links from cluster content
- An orphan page (with no internal links) is a wasted asset
- Footer and sidebar links are weaker than in-content links
To audit your internal link structure, use Screaming Frog (free for 500 URLs) or Ahrefs Site Audit. Target: every important article has at least 5 incoming internal links.
Being realistic: how long does it take to raise DA from 10 to 30?
This is the question clients ask most often. The realistic answer for a new Indonesian website:
| DA range | Estimated time | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 10 | 3-6 months | Technical setup + 20 articles + 5 backlinks |
| 10 to 20 | 6-12 months | 50+ articles + 20 quality backlinks |
| 20 to 30 | 12-24 months | 100+ articles + 50 backlinks + consistent brand mentions |
| 30 to 50 | 2-4 years | An established brand + 200+ articles + hundreds of editorial backlinks |
The DA scale is logarithmic, so moving from 10 to 20 is easier than moving from 40 to 50. Six or more months of consistent work is what makes the difference.
